About Us

Attean Lake Lodge sits quietly on Birch Island, in the middle of a wild Maine lake, where time has always moved a little differently.

In the late 1800s, Attean began as a sporting camp—simple, rugged, and rooted in the rhythms of nature. Guests came to fish, hunt, and live by daylight and lantern glow.

In the early 1900s, the lodge became a family place in the truest sense of the word. Passed from one generation to the next, it grew not through trends or reinvention, but through care. Care for the land. Care for the traditions. Care for the people who returned year after year and slowly became part of the story themselves.

Over time, Attean evolved—from a traditional sporting camp into an all-inclusive island retreat—but its heart never changed. When the original lodge was lost to fire decades ago, it wasn’t the end of Attean’s story. It was simply another chapter, one that reaffirmed what mattered most: gathering people together, feeding them well, and giving them space to breathe.

Today, Attean Lake Lodge remains intentionally off-grid and beautifully human. Cabins are softly lit. Days unfold naturally. Kids roam, friendships form easily, and conversations linger long after dinner plates are cleared. Some guests come to truly unplug. Others work a little, rest a lot, and leave clearer than when they arrived. All come looking for something real.

The lodge is now lovingly run by the 4th generation of the same family—raising children on the island, welcoming guests as neighbors, and stewarding this place with deep respect for its past and hope for its future.

We’re honored to share this special place, this history, and this way of life with you—and we hope you’ll become part of the story too.

My extended family had an amazing time at Attean...this year thirty of us gathered once more. We came from UK, the Middle East, Arizona, Montana, Canada and Vermont, lured by our confidence in the delights of Attean Lake Lodge. The isolation from the world on an island in western Maine is perfect for a family which thrives in harmony...
